Is family really... family?

Last week for my sociology class I had to answer this question, “What constitutes an ideal family?” and I chuckled a little. To me the answer was simple… that there is no ideal family, but this being a college course and having to write at least two paragraphs to answer this question I knew I would have to get a little deeper than that. A lot of people in my class said “an ideal family is when a mother and a father plays an active role in their children’s lives”, which I disagree on many levels that I will get into.
Now before going into this discussion I want to first and foremost say that this is my OPINION, which I have the RIGHT to. If you disagree with my opinions that is okay, not seeing eye to eye on things is what makes the world go round, but do not be rude. I would love to have an adult debate/discussion on it. Now that is said and done lets’ get into it.
First, I want to define what a family is to me, which is a bit unconventional to most people. Family to me does not have to be blood-related or through marriage; family can be created by you through people who love, support and want the best for you.  To people who may see me might think I have a huge family, but to me I have a close-knit family that I have created for myself.
Now to anyone who is asking themselves why my thoughts on family is the way it is… well I have had MANY situations that involved ‘family members’ doing, saying and spreading hurtful comments on me or another family member that I love dearly. Not going into details, the things that were said is NOT what ‘family’ are suppose to… at least to me their not.
Another thing that bothered me with the above statement that “an ideal family is when a mother and a father plays an active role in their children’s lives” was that it HAD to be a father and a mother. Why can’t it be a father and a father or a mother and a mother? HELLO PEOPLE, WHY DO WE STILL HAVE A 1940’S MENTALITY? Not one family is perfect, no matter how hard you try to convince yourself.
The point in making this blog was to say to all the people who are feeling alone and not with family just remember, that family is something you can create with the people who will be there for you endlessly and will LOVE you no matter what.
